William Crowder was born in Guildford, Surrey and attested for the 19th Hussars at Westminster, in July 1873. He advanced to Lance Sergeant in May 1883, and to Sergeant in June 1884. Crowder served with the Regiment in Egypt, August 1882 - June 1886. He advanced to Troop Sergeant Major in March 1890, and Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant in October 1893. Crowder was discharged, 7 April 1896, having served 22 years and 272 days with the Colours.
