The documentation comprises: Commission as a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve (15 May 1917); various letters of appointment from the Admiralty (3); Letters regarding his mobilization as an R.N.R. officer (4); Letter of appointment to H.M.S. Conflict, Portsmouth (2), Portcawl (4); letters from the Foreign Office notifying appointment as British Vice-Consul, Dakar (21 July 1917); Letter from Admiralty releasing him from this appointment (5 June 1918); Certificates of Conduct (8); Two hand written letters of reference from Vice Admiral H. J. L. Clarke, C.B.E.; photograph of Carrington-Smith in uniform; and various correspondence relating to Lord Howe Island where Carrington-Smith was shipwrecked aboard the Annasonia in January 1907.
