William Tomlinson enlisted at Beverley, Yorkshire, on 3 June 1878, aged 18, a labourer by trade. He served in South Africa from February 1879 to January 1882, taking part in the Zulu and Sekukuni campaigns. He also served in the Transvaal campaign of 1880-81 and was present at the siege of Potchefstroom from 11 December 1880 to 21 March 1881. He afterwards served with the regiment in India and is entitled to the medal for ‘Burma 1885-87’. He was discharged to Army Reserve on 6 December 1888. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll entries.
