Herbert Frederick Leveridge was born in Tonbridge Well, Kent, in May 1928. He enlisted as a regular soldier in November 1945, and after his 6 months basic training was posted to join the Royal Hampshire Regiment. Leveridge volunteered for service in Korea, and was posted to the Gloucestershire Regiment in March 1951.
Leveridge was serving with ‘D’ Company when they were attacked in their positions just south of the River Imjin, 23 April 1951. After two days of heavy fighting, and facing an impossible position, the regiment were ordered to break out and make their way back to the UN rearguard some seven miles to the south of their original positions. Most of the Glosters were taken prisoner of war, however a small number including Leveridge managed to make it back to safety. He continued to serve with the Glosters until September 1953, and returned to his parent regiment later that year.
Leveridge advanced to Sergeant, and served with the Royal Hampshire Regiment in Malaya. He was discharged in September 1961, and died at Padstow, Cornwall in January 1992.
