South Africa 1834-53 (Capt. R. Howarth. Rl. Engineers.) extremely fine £600-£700

Richard Howorth/Howarth was born at Ipswich on 13 October 1801, and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 6 August 1825; Lieutenant, 11 April 1827; 2nd Captain, 7 September 1840; Captain, 1 April 1856. He served overseas at Gibraltar in 1826-7, in Portugal in 1827-8, in Corfu in 1828-33, in Canada in 1834-42, and at the Cape of Good Hope from June 1845 to March 1847, and again from November 1847 to March 1851. Captain Howorth served in the Kaffir campaign of 1846 as Senior Officer of Royal Engineers, attached to the 1st Division Commanded by Major-General Hare. He was responsible for the design of the defences of Fort Cox in 1847, and the design and construction of Queen’s Fort and Military Barracks at Bloemfontein in 1849. Various of his plans and letters survive at The National Archives at Kew, London. He was promoted to Major on 11 November 1851, retired on Full Pay the following month and received his final promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1854. Lieutenant-Colonel Howorth died at Boulogne-sur-Mer on 9 December 1872. Sold with copied record of service and other research.
