George Brown was born at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, and enlisted into the 6th Foot at Leeds on 7 December 1842, aged 20, a farmer by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 11 years 1 month, and in the East Indies for 3 years, during which period he participated in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53 (Medal), and in the Indian Mutiny (Medal). He was also awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 gratuity. Sold with a 6th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and copied discharge papers.
