Frederick Joliffe Bayly was appointed Ensign in the 91st Regiment on 30 October 1837, becoming Lieutenant on 23 September 1841 and Captain on 13 October 1848, both steps in rank by purchase. He served with the 1st Battalion 91st Regiment in Colonel Hare’s expedition against the Dutch Boers in 1842-43, and was present with the regiment at Colesburg on 29 April 1845. He was with a detachment of the regiment serving with Colonel Johnson’s column in the Amatola Mountains in 1846-47, and afterwards on sweeps in the Fish River bush, at Commatjes Post and Trompeters Drift, and later at Waterloo Bay, June to December 1847.
Bayly retired from the service by the sale of his commission on 17 February 1854, and was appointed Major in the 6th West Yorkshire Militia on 27 May 1854. He became Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 June 1874 and commanded the regiment from 1881 until 15 April 1884. He died at Bournemouth on 8 September 1909, aged 89.
He is mentioned many times by Surgeon-General Monro, M.D., C.B., in his book Service and Campaigning in Many Lands, published in 1887.
