Michael Lynch was born in the Parish of Shanagolden, County Limerick, and enlisted for the 12th Foot at Rathkeale, Limerick, on 11 April 1843. He served abroad at Mauritius for 7 years and at the Cape of Good Hope for 7 years 1 month, taking part in the Kaffir War of 1850-53. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £5 and was discharged to Pension at Chatham on 24 July 1866. He was transferred from his Chelsea Pension to Kilmainham as an In-Pensioner in December 1901 and died on 12 January 1905. Sold with a 12th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead, copied discharge papers and some muster research.
