Pair: Private John Day, 2nd Battalion, 60th Regiment

South Africa 1834-53 (J. Day. 2nd Btn. 60th Regt.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 2nd issue, large letter reverse (No. 976. John Day. Pte. 2nd Bn. 60th Rifles. 1854.) engraved naming, fitted with original steel clip and ring suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine (2) £400-£500

John Day was born in the Parish of Stafford and attested for the 60th Rifles at Templemore, County Tipperary, on 23 January 1833, aged 18, a shoemaker by trade. He served abroad in the Mediterranean (Corfu) 5 years 5 months, in the West Indies (Jamaica) 2 years 11 months, in North America (Quebec) 2 years, and at the Cape of Good Hope 2 years 4 months. He ‘served in the Kaffir War in 1851 52 53’ and was discharged at Chatham on 25 July 1854, ‘Worn Out, the result of Military Service including exposure & fatigue in the Field during the last Caffre War.’ Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
