Ernest Walter Douglas Foote was born in Hackney, London, on 24 April 1899, and attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 20 February 1917. He served during the Great War with the 9th Battalion on the Western Front from 23 May 1917, and was wounded in action on 18 August 1917. Invalided to England with trench feet on 27 October of that year, he transferred to the 5th Battalion on 15 June 1918, and was discharged on 31 March 1920, after 3 years and 40 days’ service. He died in the City of London in 1983.
