Joseph Fredrick Ford was born in Devonport, Devon in January 1881. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker in March 1899, and served with H.M.S. Pearl, December 1901 - November 1904. Ford advanced to Stoker Petty Officer in 1910, subsequent service during the Great War included with H.M.S. Foyle, 1915-1916, and the destroyer H.M.S. Nicator, April 1916 - August 1917 - the latter being present at the Battle of Jutland. Ford advanced to Chief Stoker in February 1916, and was ‘Shore Pensioned’ in 1919.
