Joseph Clist was born on 4 May 1858, at Bawdrip, Somerset, and entered the Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 5 June 1878, aged 20 on a 10-year engagement. After 8 months in Indus, he joined Seagull on 18 February 1879, and was advanced to Stoker on 1 July 1879. He spent 42 days with hard labour in the Naval Prison in London from 14 November 1881, and afterwards spent a further two stints of hard labour of 36 days and 39 days, the latter in Bodmin Gaol before finally leaving Seagull on 23 May 1883. During this period he saw service during the Egyptian campaign from July to September 1882.

After short periods in Royal Adelaide and Asia, he joined Orontes on 1 October 1883, serving in her during the Suakin operations of 1884. He was advanced to Leading Stoker in August 1886 and left the ship 3 weeks later on 31 August. His career remained rather erratic thereafter, being reduced and restored in rate and similarly being deprived and restored of Good Conduct Badges on various occasions. He was finally discharged to a pension on 10 April 1899. Sold with copied record of service.
