William John Tickle was born in Warrington, Lancashire, and attested for the 16th Foot at Parsonstown on 6 February 1854, aged 14 years 10 months, a musician by trade. He was appointed Drummer on 1 September 1855, but resigned that appointment to become a Private on 31 July 1857, shortly after reaching the age of 18. He re-engaged at Hamilton, Canada, for a further 11 years service on 26 October 1866, and was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1870, and to Sergeant on 19 April 1873. He was granted his L.S. & G.C. medal with a £5 Gratuity from 1 November 1876, and transferred to the 2nd Lancashire Militia from 25 August 1877 until his final discharge on 14 May 1878. During his total service of 21 years 20 days, he served overseas in Canada for 11 years 1 month. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
