Benjamin Howarth entered the war on 25 September 1914, when the 1/5th Territorial Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, landed in Egypt as part of the 42nd Division, and subsequently landed at Gallipoli on 5 May 1915. Howarth was discharged on 18 April 1916.
