Henry Frederick Baker was born in Clifton, Bristol, on 29 August 1870, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Hamilton, Ontario, on 1 May 1915, having previously served in the Bechuanaland Mounted Rifles. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 36th Battalion, and also saw service with the 18th Battalion, the 3rd Reserve battalion, the 1st Central Ontario Regimental Depot, and the Chinese Labour Battalion, and his name was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War ‘for valuable services rendered in connection with the War’ on 24 February 1917. He was seconded for duty with the War Office on 14 September 1917, and was demobilised on 15 July 1919.
