John Kent was born in Croydon, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Cavalry on 12 September 1876, aged 19 years. Posted to the 19th Hussars, he served in Egypt and the Sudan from August 1882 to November 1885, before transferring to the Army Reserve in September 1888.
