A. G. Cox served in H.M.S. Black Swan during the Yangtze incident, 1949. H.M.S. Black Swan suffered 12 men wounded and severe damage to her superstructure in a fierce engagement with Chinese batteries in their attempt to help H.M.S. Amethyst, before falling back. The failed relief effort cost the ships involved 46 men killed and 64 injured.
