William Richard Lee was reported missing on 10 July 1917, and later confirmed as a prisoner of war at Lunburg, Germany. He was later transferred to Gefangenlager, Germany, and was repatriated on 7 January 1919.

Sold with full research together with a wooden scroll holder containing three parchment scrolls conferring the Freedom of the City of London on William Richard Lee (1 June 1851), William Charles Lee (7 June 1882) and William Richard Lee (6 February 1907) - the last believed to be the recipient of the above medals.
