Five: Lieutenant S. Mackie, 4th Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, late Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant, Lovat’s Scouts - with whom he was M.I.D. for services in Gallipoli

Samuel Mackie ‘joined 1st Lovat Scouts I.Y. (T.F.) in 1907. Promoted Orderly Room Corporal 1908 - O.R. Sergt. 1909, and served continuously until mobilised in August 1914.

Entered Trinity College, Cambridge as a Cadet Nov. 1916, and received Commission in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, in March, 1917.

Proceeded on active service on [26] Sept, 1915 and served abroad until termination of war (except for the period at the Cadet School), in the following spheres:

(1) Dardanelles with Lovat Scouts, Yeo, 1915
(2) Egypt ditto 1916
(3) Egypt as an officer in 4th K.O.S.B. 1917
(4) Palestine ditto 1918
(5) France ditto 1918-19

On above periods I was never absent from duty through sickness or wounds.

During my embodiment I attended various Schools of Instruction and gained the following certificates:

(a) Cavalry General N.C.O.s - Distinguished
(b) Signalling General Officer - Distinguished (highest place in School)
(c) Intelligence Officer - 1st Class

Was Battn. Intelligence Officer for 12 months and performed the duties of adjutant and Brigade I.O. on several occasions. Was Battn. Signalling Officer when demobilised in January 1919, with the rank of Lieut.

I was mentioned in Despatches for services rendered at Gallipoli, 1915.’

In later life Mackie resided at 1 Queen Street, Craigie, Perth.
