Thomas Charlton Merrick was born at Bathwick, Somerset, on 4 September 1822, and was commissioned Ensign on 10 December 1842. He arrived at Calcutta in April 1843, and served with the 3rd Bengal Native Infantry during the Second Sikh War under Brigadier Wheeler, where he was present at the assault on the heights of Dullah. Promoted Lieutenant in January 1850, and Captain in February 1858, he spent the remainder of his career in India supervising the construction of Canals and Irrigation channels, and was several times Mentioned in Despatches for his excellent work. He retired with the rank of Colonel (Supervising Engineer 1st Class) on 6 November 1871, and died in Ireland in 1891.
