Sidney James Marshall Glass was born on 26 September 1895, and attested for the South Wales Borderers on 20 August 1915, serving with them during the Great War. He transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment on 16 February 1919, and served with them in India from 4 November 1919 to 1 March 1922, attached to the Waziristan Force. He was discharged on 31 March 1922, and subsequently joined the Royal Artillery (Territorial Army).
