Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Lieut. Campbell Clarke, 64th. Regt.) extremely fine £340-£380

Campbell Clarke (also listed as Clark) was commissioned Ensign in the 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers on 9 December 1844, and was promoted Lieutenant on 15 August 1847. He served during the Second Sikh War 1848-49, and was present at the passage of the Chenab, the action of Ramnuggur, and the Battles of Chilianwala, 13 January 1849, and Goojerat, 21 February 1849 (entitled to the Punjab Medal with two clasps). He subsequently served in Burma during the Second Burma War (entitled to an Indian General Service Medal with clasp Pegu). He served in India during the great Sepoy Mutiny, on attachment to the 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot, and was present during the operations at Cawnpore under General Windham in November 1857, and was very dangerously wounded. He was promoted Captain in the 104th (Bengal Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot on 28 November 1859, and was promoted Major on 28 November 1868.

Housed in a fitted display box additionally with space for a two clasp medal (presumably intended for the recipient’s Punjab Medal with two clasps), with a hand-written label on the back which reads ‘Col. Campbell Clark’s medals’.

Note: Campbell Clarke appears on the supplementary list of officers entitled to the Indian Mutiny medal, where his unit is given as his parent unit of 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers; the fact that his medal is named to the 64th Regiment, rather than the 88th Regiment, is presumably due to an error at the Mint.
