In September 1860 the 99th Regiment marched to Pekin to take part in the action at Chang-Chia-Wan, the following month it participated in the sacking of Peking. A small Chinese lapdog (now called the Pekinese) was named ‘Lootie’ and given to Queen Victoria by Captain J. H. Dunne- it was the first dog of its kind seen in Europe.
