Under the Childers Reforms of 1881, the 1st Queen's Edinburgh Rifle Volunteer Brigade provided two Volunteer Battalions of the Royal Scots. In 1888 it was designated The Queen’s Rifle Volunteer Brigade Royal Scots and split into three battalions.
