Waterloo 1815 (Captain Tho. Ramsay, 3rd Batt. 14th Reg. Foot.) fitted with original steel clip and ring suspension, light contact marks to the obverse, otherwise good very fine £3,000-£4,000

Thomas Ramsay was born on 24 February 1786, second son of Sir Alexander Ramsay, of Balmain, Kincardineshire. He was appointed Ensign in the 52nd Foot, by Purchase, on 19 June 1806, and was promoted to Lieutenant, without Purchase, on 10 February 1808. He was appointed Captain in the 47th Foot, by Purchase, on 24 May 1810, and exchanged into the 14th Foot on 10 October 1810.

Captain Ramsay served with the 52nd at the siege of Copenhagen and battle of Kioge in 1807; in the Peninsula in 1808-09, including the battle of Vimiera, and retreat through Galicia; and on the expedition to the Scheldt. He served with the 47th at the defence of Cadiz in 1810 and 1811, and with the 14th at Genoa, and also at the battle of Waterloo, storming of Cambrai and the capture of Paris. He went on half-pay at his own request on 25 March 1816.

At Waterloo, Captain Ramsay commanded Captain Henry Morton’s company. In addition to the Waterloo he later claimed and received the Peninsula medal with the single clasp for Vimiera. Thomas Ramsay died on 18 December 1857, aged 71, and is buried in the family plot in East Church Graveyard, Banchory, Aberdeenshire.
