Alexander McKenzie was born in Ardersier near Campbell Town, Inverness. He attested in the Royal Artillery at Inverness in March 1806. McKenzie was present at the capture of Copenhagen in 1807, and served in May’s Company, 1st Battalion, Royal Artillery during the Peninsular War. He was promoted to Bombardier and Corporal in May 1815. Two men of this name appear on the Waterloo Roll, one as a Driver with D Troop, Royal Artillery Drivers and the other in McKenzie’s rank of Corporal with Captain Lloyd’s Company (however no mention of Waterloo service is made in his papers).
McKenzie was promoted to Sergeant in March 1824, and to Colour Sergeant in March 1826. He was discharged, 30 June 1833, having served 27 years and 181 days.
