James Alexander Dunbar was born on 20 October 1815, and appointed Assistant Surgeon in the Bengal Medical Department on 12 December 1837; Surgeon, 31 March 1851; Surgeon Major, 1 February 1859; Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals, 31 March 1863. He served with the 43rd Native Infantry with the Army of the Sutlej in 1845-46; appointed Staff Surgeon of the 4th, on Sir Robert Dicks’ Division; present at the battle of Sobraon (Medal). Appointed to the Medical Charge of Artillery Division at Lahore, in April 1846, which formed part of the Army of Occupation. He retired on 1 November 1868, and died at Clapham on 6 June 1901. Some sources show him as being entitled to a Gwalior Star.
