John Guard Day, from Portsea, Hampshire, was born on 16 December 1876. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 16 December 1894, serving initially in H.M.S. St Vincent. He served in a number of ships, before joining H.M.S. Fox on 14 April 1896, having risen rapidly to Leading Seaman. He served with H.M.S. Fox at Sierra Leone, before joining H.M.S. Duke of Wellington on 8 July 1899. From then until 26 March 1914, he served on numerous ships, joining H.M.S. Excellent as a Petty Officer the following day. Joining the Monmouth Class armoured Cruiser H.M.S. Kent on 3 October 1914, he would serve in this ship for most of the Great War, including at the Battle of the Falklands on 8 December 1914, and at the battle of Mas a Tierra on 14 March 1915, and was advanced to Chief Petty Officer on 1 June 1916. On 11 June 1918, he was transferred to H.M.S. Victory I and on 18 September 1918, to H.M.S. Excellent. He was discharged from the Royal Navy in 1920.
