Frederick Chapman was born in Luton, Bedfordshire on 10 December 1882 and enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry as a Private on 22 July 1901. He won the Naval Good Shooting Medal as part of H.M.S. Implacable’s Quick Firing 12 pounder gun crew in 1913 and was discharged in July of the same year. He enrolled with the Royal Fleet Reserve on 18 June 1914 and served at Ostend from 26 August to 1 September 1914. He was demobilised on 10 April 1919.
