Three: Major C. Bishop, Worcestershire Regiment, later Pioneer Corps

Claud Bishop was born at Birling, Kent in August 1885. He was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Connaught Rangers (Galway Militia) in July 1904, a commission he resigned the following year upon travelling to America. Bishop later resided at Coldingham, Belbroughton, near Stourbridge, Worcestershire. He was commissioned Temporary Lieutenant in the 11th (Service) Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment in November 1914. Bishop served with the Battalion in the French theatre of war from 21 September 1915.

Bishop moved with the Battalion for service in Macedonia in November 1915. He contracted dysentery, and was casevaced to Malta in March 1916. Due to medical complications, Bishop was sent back to the UK for an operation followed by recuperation. He returned to service with the 4th battalion, Worcestershire Regiment in the French theatre of war, 7 May 1917. Bishop advanced to Temporary Captain, and was serving in Ypres when he was gassed, 2 August 1917. Additionally suffering from appendicitis, Bishop was sent back to the UK to recuperate.

Bishop’s subsequent postings included at the Southern Command Depot and the Irish Command. He was released from service, 5 November 1919. Bishop then resided at Langdale, Imperial Road, Kidderminster, and was appointed to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers in April 1922. He re-engaged for service during the Second War, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps, 30 March 1942. He advanced to Temporary Major in September 1944, and retired the following year. Major Bishop died at Kidderminster General Hospital in May 1969.
