John Murray was born in Westminster, London, in 1816, and attested for the 32nd Regiment of Foot prior to the regiment being sent to Canada in 1837-38, where it fought at the Battles of Saint-Denis and Saint-Eustache, during the Lower Canada Rebellion. Promoted Corporal on 3 June 1841, and Sergeant on 1 May 1843, he served during the Second Sikh War and saw action at the First and Third Siege of Mooltan in 1848-49 and at the Battle of Goojerat on 21 February 1849, and subsequently during operation on the North West Frontier of India. He was discharged medically unfit at Chatham on 30 June 1857, and therefore missed out on the Indian Mutiny campaign.
