John Sparrow was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the 98th Regiment of Foot on 5 September 1854, and served with the 2nd Battalion in the 12th Expedition of the North West Frontier Campaign in 1858 for the operations of the Sittana Field Force under Major General Sir Sydney Cotton in Panjtar and Lower Sittana. He was promoted Surgeon Major on 2 November 1866, and later transferred to the 89th Regiment based in Madras. He was advanced Brigade Surgeon on 27 November 1879, and finally to the honorary rank of Deputy Surgeon-General on 30 November 1881.
