William Gordon Amey was born in Southampton on 25 March 1897. He was appointed a 2nd Mate in the Merchant Navy on 15 October 1917, and a Sub-Lieutenant Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve 25 October 1917, serving in the Ascot Paddle Minesweeper Wetherby from 25 March 1918, which was named after the racecourse. He earned his Board of Trade Certificate as a Master on 17 January 1920, and then left the R.N.V.R. to carry on in the Merchant Navy where he also served during the Second World War. He died in Winchester in 1968.
