Herbert Gill was born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, in 1879, and attested for the Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry at Doncaster on 13 February 1901. He served with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 March 1901 to 23 August 1902, and was discharged on 30 August 1902, after 1 year and 199 days’ service. For his services he received the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, and the two date clasps.
