Ernest Leslie Hills, who was educated at Simon Langton School, Canterbury, was a schoolmaster at Conway in Wales when he enlisted in the Corps of Interpreters in October 1914. Two months later he was Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 12th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. In May 1915, he was seconded for attachment to the 1st Nigeria Regiment, West African Frontier Force. Arriving in the Cameroons on 15 June 1915, he was severely wounded during an action in the Cameroons on 25 November 1915, dying of wounds the same day (although his Medal Index Card gives his date of death as 26 November). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Zaria Memorial, Nigeria.
