William Thomson Sinclair attested in the 261 (II Lowland) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery in February 1913. He served with the Brigade as part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division in the Egyptian theatre of war from 18 June 1915. Sinclair was discharged due to sickness, 19 March 1919. He subsequently advanced to Warrant Officer Class 1 with the Lothians and Border Yeomanry.
