Bertram John Leigh Greenland was born in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire in December 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in February 1941, and was commissioned Pilot Officer on probation in April 1943. He advanced to Flight Lieutenant in April 1945, and graduated from No. 10 Course, at the Test Pilots School, Farnborough in 1951. Greenland received his Royal Aero Club Aviators certificate in January 1952, and advanced to Squadron Leader in July 1955.

Greenland served as a test pilot at R.A.E. Bedford from 1958, and was an Assessor for the public inquiry into the accident involving a B.E.A. Viscount which crashed at Nutt’s Corner Airport, Belfast, 23 October 1957 (A.F.C.). Greenland retired in January 1962, and was subsequently employed as a Sales Manager by Sperry Gyroscope Co. Ltd. He died in Bangor, Wales, in February 2015.
