Samuel Edward Hayward, a stable boy from London, was born on 22 October 1875. He joined the Royal Navy on 22 October 1893 as a Boy Second Class. Initially serving with H.M.S. St Vincent, he served on a number of other ships before joining H.M.S. Fearless on 15 November 1897. Serving with this ship during the Boer War, he transferred to H.M.S. Duke of Wellington on 9 November 1900 and was advanced to Petty Officer First Class, being awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1908. It is not clear what his service was during the Great War, other than he attained the rating of Chief Petty Officer.
