William Lionel Davy was born on 27 July 1863 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 15 July 1880. Serving as an Assistant Clerk aboard H.M.S. Royal Adelaide for a month, he then joined H.M.S. Achilles, serving with this ship until 28 May 1885. Having taken part in the Egyptian campaign of 1882, over the next 36 years Davy would have a very large number of appointments, both afloat and shore based. Promoted Paymaster in 1897 and Staff Paymaster in 1902, he was promoted Fleet Paymaster in 1905, serving with this rank until his retirement on 1 January 1921. On retirement he was granted the honorary rank of Captain, and died in 1947, aged 84.
