Sidney Ashley attested for the Grenadier Guards, and served with the 2nd Battalion in Egypt, before transferring to the 3rd Battalion. The 3rd Battalion was mustered at Suakin on 20 February 1885, and at Hasheen, on 20 March 1885, over 2,000 Arabs charged the Guards’ square, but were received by such a withering fire that not one was able to reach the outer line of levelled bayonets. The Battalion’s casualties were 1 Officer and 22 other ranks killed, and about 50 of all ranks wounded, and enemy casualties were approximately 300 killed.
