Gilbert Francis Brown was born in Camberwell, London, on 19 January 1888, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 4 June 1903. Advanced Petty Officer on 1 January 1915, he served during the Great War in the armed merchant cruiser H.M.S. Mantua from 5 November 1917, and died of pneumonia on 23 August 1918. He is buried at King Tom Cemetery, Freetown, Sierra Leone.
