The original Recommendation states: ‘For conspicuous energy, bravery, and resource displayed on the 2-3 June 1916, whilst carrying out his duties as linesman repairing and laying telephone lines between Zillebeke Bund and the front line, during intense enemy bombardment. This after nine weeks of excellent work as linesman between Ypres Ramparts and the front line, supervising working parties burying cables in Sanctuary Wood.’
Robert Stanley MacDonald was born in Montreal on 3 December 1896, and attested there for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 1 February 1915. He served with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 October 1915, and was attached to the 3rd Divisional Signal Company, Canadian Engineers, as a Linesman, from 30 April 1916. For his good work over the next two months he was awarded the Military Medal. He was discharged on 29 March 1919.
