William Beveridge Thomson was born in Edinburgh on 21 May 1809, and joined the Bengal Army as an Ensign on 30 June 1826; Lieutenant, 8 April 1828; Captain, 3 August 1837; Major, 21 September 1854; Lieutenant-Colonel, 13 July 1858; Brevet Colonel, 29 May 1857. He retired on 31 December 1861 with the rank of Hon. Major-General.
Posted to the 67th Native Infantry in May 1827, Thomson was appointed Deputy Assistant Commissary General in November 1842 and served in that capacity at the battle of Ferozeshuhur during the Sikh Wars of 1845-46 (Medal). He transferred to the newly raised 3rd Bengal European Regiment in November 1853, and served during the Indian Mutiny, as Brevet Colonel and Deputy Commissary General, at the siege of Delhi (Medal with clasp). For his services during the Mutiny Thomson was created a Companion of the Bath on 18 June 1858.
