Hammer Price:
£240

Elizabeth II (1952- ), Decimal issues, Trial 50 Pence, on a 12-sided cupro-nickel flan, large numerical mark of value both sides, edge plain, 30mm, 13.04g/12h; together with a struck 10-sided cupro-nickel blank, edge plain, 30mm, 12.54g (cf. DNW 67, 428) [2]. Virtually as struck, first extremely rare £200-£260

First only illustrated. In Appendix 1 of the Royal Mint Report, 1968, it was stated that ‘considerable trial work was carried out on the 50 new penny coin.’ Because the final selection was announced in December 1968, it may be presumed that the ‘50’ trial in this lot were struck sometime in 1968 at Tower Hill. Shaped trials of seven, ten and twelves sides were made, with the final selection of the seven-sided coin on a 30mm flan echoing the size criteria described in the 1966 report

First item is 12-sided, second is 10-sided
