Edward Sparks was born in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, on 2 October 1869, and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman on 26 October 1891. Advanced Ship’s Corporal 1st Class in April 1900, he joined H.M.S. Barfleur on 28 April 1900, and served in her during the Third China War. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 15 December 1905. He was promoted to Master-at-Arms on 1 October 1907, and was shore pensioned on 20 October 1913. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 25 October 1913, he served during the Great War in various shore based establishments, before being invalided out of the service on 1 May 1918.
