Ernest Alexander Johnston was born on 14 December 1881, and served as a Farrier Sergeant with the 74th (Dublin) Company, 8th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War. He transferred to the South African Constabulary on 22 April 1901, before joining the Imperial Light Horse as a Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant on 10 July 1903. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the 11th Mounted Rifles on 24 October 1914, and served with them during the early stages of the Great War, before transferring to the 4th Dismounted Brigade Train, South African Service Corps. Following the cessation of hostilities he was placed on the Reserve of Officers, Transports and Remounts Branch, with the rank of Captain on 30 June 1926.
