Henry John Murphy was born at Atherfield Coastguard Station, Southampton, the son of Michael Murphy, a Chief Boatman in the Coastguard, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Irresistible on 11 December 1867. Advanced Able Seaman, he transferred to H.M.S. Egeria on 6 November 1874, and served in her during the Perak campaign from 18 November to 4 December 1875. Advanced Petty Officer 1st Class on 10 March 1881, he was invalided out of the service on 7 March 1884.
