George Mann served with the Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) during the Great War in the Egyptian Theatre from 25 September 1914. The two medal index cards which exist for this recipient are consistent with the two different service numbers on his Great War medals. His second Medal Index Card also gives his new Territorial Force 1917 service number as 700266. This number together with his date of arrival in Egypt show that he served with 1/1 East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force), 42nd (East Lancashire) Division, which was the first Territorial Division to serve abroad, and saw action during the Great War in Egypt, the Dardanelles, where they were much depleted, and from March 1917 on the Western Front, by which time the 1/1 East Lancashire Brigade, R.F.A. had become 210 Brigade, R.F.A.
