Bertie Grimbleby was born in Bolton, Lancashire ,on 16 June 1905, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 28 January 1921. Promoted Leading Seaman on 1 July 1934, he served in the destroyer H.M.S. Boadicea from October 1933 to 25 July 1936, based in the Mediterranean, thereby just qualifying for the Naval General Service Medal, and was advanced Acting Petty Officer on 25 July 1935. Awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 16 May 1938, he served during the Second World War as a Gunner in H.M.S. Shearwater from 13 September 1939 to 15 April 1942, and then in H.M.S. Durban from 23 September 1942 to November 1943. He was promoted Acting Commissioned Gunner on 18 June 1945, and was placed on the Retired List on 28 January 1949, after 28 years’ service.
