John Hastewell was killed in action at Ferozeshuhur on 21 December 1845. He was born in York and was a shoemaker before enlisting into the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment on 30 March 1840. The 29th and 80th Regiments together attacked the right of the Sikh position and carried the enemy entrenchments by storm at the point of bayonet, but were then subjected to fierce Sikh counter-attacks. The 29th lost 3 officers and 52 men killed, and 3 officers and 192 men wounded in this bloody battle.
